Thoughts on money and the local economy by local open source IT businessman

shop imageSmall businesses are the lifeblood of the economy we are told by those in power, and every encouragement is given to start your own business. However I have also heard that cashflow is the main death of a small business. Quantative Easing (Q.E.) was meant to “kick start” the economy and get banks
to lend to small businesses, but from what I have read, this is not happening.

Working in I.T. you learn to solve problems, break things down into manageble chunks, and get to the source of what is going wrong. This is not to say that problem solving is the sole preverve of the I.T. professional, as I believe that all work (life even) is essentailly problem solving.

However in I.T. you have to have a curious mind, see problems as challenges, and continually work to improve the system.

“Money doesn’t grow on trees” we are told from an early age, but did you ever find out where it does come from?

It took my curiosity as to why the Government through Q.E., pass money to banks to then pass it on to money sterlingbusinesses. Why not just cut out the middle man. The Government could then earn interest on the loans, which could go towards say schools, NHS, infrastructure . . .

Looking for answers I spent a lot of research time on the internet, and came across many experts Bill Still, Max Keiser, Mike Maloney, Steve Keen, Ellen Brown . . . (Not every day names), and discovered the history of money and how it is used to control society, among other things. Conspiracy Theories aside, the fact is that money plays a crucial role in shaping and controlling society, and yet hardly any of us know why and how the money system works, which is disturbing.

Armed with this knowledge and not knowing how to deploy it is a frustrating thing. Luckily I came across the “Positive Money” website and found a group of volunteers dedicated to exposing the wrongs of the system, but not only that they have a credible plan to put the system right. Based on the book by Andrew positive moneyJackson and Ben Dyson “Modernising Money”, In the 5 years since Ben Dyson founded the campaign they have forced a debate in parliament, the first in 150 years, on money creation. One of their supporters is Lord Adair turner (Chairman of the financial Services Authority (2008-2013), who said:

“The fianancial crisis of 2007/08 occured because we failed to constrain the PRIVATE financial system’s creation of private credit and money” (6th Feb 2013).

Positive Money campaign is to raise awarenes of how money is created, by whom and for what purpose. In a nutshell PRIVATE banks CREATE money when loans are taken out thereby increasing the money supply. When loans are repaid the money supply shrinks. Positive Money want to take this power away from the banks and place it with an independant body accountable to parliament.

One of the key statistics to observe is that during the period 1997-2007 banks lent more for financial speculation than to small businessess:

Allocation of the money supply by Private Commecial Banks on behalf of the Nation 1997-2007:

  • 40% Housing & Commercial Property, arguably leading to property bubbles.
  • 37% Financial Assets.
  • 13% Non Financial Business i.e. small business, construction (real economy).
  • 10% Credit Card & Personal Loans.

We are all concerned lately about the environment, where our food comes from, the quality of our water, saving energy, squeezing the most our of what we have got. I would add the money system to that list. The quality not just the quanity of money has a huge impact on our lives. If money is your god then maybe you have no concern where it comes from, but if you see it as a means to an end, a catalyst, a driver to improve our lives and our communities then I would argue that you need to be involved in its creation and use.

If you maybe you are sceptical of the above information, or perhaps think it incosequential to your daily life, at least I hope that this article has piqued your interest and curiosity to find out more about the subject yourself. https://positivemoney.org/

Timebank swaps of the week help Redbridge start-up businesses with websites, accounts and wording for profiles

Featuring some help on the Timebank for start-up businesses this week 🙂Stephanie help Amanda on Timebank with her website

Stephanie helped Amanda to set up her website and then a little support afterwards.  Within 2.5 hours it was live!! Then Amanda gave Stephanie an hour support with her accounts for her Osteo Myology complementary health business.

Later in the week Harminder helped Jaswant for a couple of hours to work on the written content for her Linked In profile and her website, which is not quite live yet.  Harminder is a start-up business in copy editing and copy writing.

I helped Jaswant to rewrite her business profile for her Linkedin page. We focused on putting together a clearer description of the educational and tutoring services she’s offering to children, young people, and schools, ensuring that she’s pitching it in the right way. Getting the language right can be tricky. And people often find it difficult to put everything that’s in their head down on paper in a way that’s very clear for the reader. That’s why having a fresh pair of eyes can be helpful – the other person can often see what you yourself cannot!  HARMINDER SETHI

Sophia Hubs volunteer looking to strengthen green business sector in Redbridge – your help needed

Begona BelmonteWe’ve noticed that lots of interesting green initiatives and micro businesses are emerging and thriving in other London boroughs like Hackney and not so much in Redbridge.  Or so it seems.

We have created an online green business directory which we realise already needs updating – eg bike shops should be added and Brenda the green interior painter/decorator.

So we are delighted that Planet Falafel (an environmentally friendly, vegetarian catering business) owner Begona Belmonte of Seven Kings, who is currently volunteering on the Timebank, is willing to spend a couple of hour a week in October and November to explore ways of supporting and increasing this sector in Redbridge.  Begona is also a member of Redbridge Transition Town.

Begona will also be making contact with green charities and voluntary groups, to help build links and cooperation between the business and community sectors.  In fact this is perhaps a USP of Sophia Hubs –  that we are experts in bringing community resources into the business sector!  (See Aidan’s blog on our take on economic community development.)

Really looking forward to what Begona finds out and ideas she comes up with 🙂

If you want to help, have ideas, or suggestions for businesses to be included, please get in touch with Begona on 07985 540786 or

Indie Christmas craft market in Chadwell Heath 5th Dec looking for few more craft stalls and a childrens charity to support

Cushions Curtains CoutureI am manager and owner of Chadwell Heath business Cushions Curtains Couture and Christmas is a very busy time for crafting and sales 🙂 I am running a local independent market to let Redbridge residents buy quality, locally made crafts for Christmas presents.

Saturday 5th December 12.30-4.30

Festive Fun flyer Marlena SamThis is my 2nd year organising a Christmas themed event. Last year was very successful but the venue upon feedback was too small so have selected larger premises off Chadwell Heath High Road. St Chads Church Hall, Eric Road, Chadwell Heath, RM6 6JH.  I have a Santa’s Grotto and Activities table and currently trying to find a bouncy castle hirers.

The footfall last year was around 100-125 people. That was an event that was planned in 5 weeks. This event I will be pushing hard advertising from mid October. Banners, posters and leaflets will be up and distributed locally and a lot of social media advertising

Here are the businesses on board already… Cup cakes… Large cakes… Sweet cart… Caribbean catering… Forever Living Products… Event planner… Knitted items… Cushions… Face painter… Handmade cards… Tombola… I have quite a few potentials who have up to the 25th or 30th to pay so people can be placed on a waiting list if they do clash with another business I’m awaiting payment from.

I am currently looking for people that supply goods or services best suited to that time of year. 7kbp pop up Marlena SamPlaque makers, hampers, personalised plates/cutlery, glitter glasses, jewellery, scarves, etc. Items that people can be purchasing as gifts and stocking fillers. I don’t require any hot food but a stall selling crisps/chocolates/can drinks (no sweets) though would be great.

The cost of a stall is £20 + a prize donation to the raffle. I am still looking for a children’s charity that the event can support with the raffle.

I am a big supporter of local markets and attended the Seven Kings Pop Up market in the  Spring where they took this photo.  Please get in touch to find out about stalls opportunities – cushionscurtainscouture@hotmail.com  07903 799196

Thanks, Marlena Sam
